I knew Rick since Junior high school in State College. He was a caring and friendly soul who spent more time laughing and giggling than nearly anyone I know. I cannot recall him being unkind or mean in many years. I will always be impressed by the way he took Justin in as a son and became a true dad. I know all about how challenging it can be to become a step parent. I knew Rick well enough to to see that he truly loved Justin and Marlo. My heart goes out to Marlo and Justin in this difficult time. You are in my prayers and thoughts of lovingkindness. I have many memories of his sense of humor and enjoyment of life. We will all miss him dearly, but I'm sure that he doesn't want us to be too sad.

Marlowe I can't even imagine what you and your family are going through. I found this poem in a Hospice pamphlet that gave me comfort when my brother and mom passed.

Gone from My sight
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone."

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.

And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying...

My condolences to the Ellenberger family. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of dear Ricky. Some Bible scriptures that have helped me during times of loss include Isaiah 26:19 and Psalm 37:28,29 which states in part: "Your dead ones will live...They will rise up". And the Bible also says "The righteous themselves will possess the earth and they will forever reside upon it". Therefore the Bible promises that we may be reunited with our loved ones lost in death by means of an earthly resurrection. This is further confirmed by John 5:28,29 which says "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". This is possible thanks to Jesus Christ's ransom sacrifice. Thus we have a genuine hope of everlasting life in a world without wickedness or suffering.
